Ward Shelley's "Flatland" at the SCULPTURE CENTER
James Kalm pedals to Long Island City to see the Sculpture Center's group exhibition "The Happiness of Objects" featuring "Flatland". Ward Shelley and his team (Pelle Brage, Eva La Cour, Douglas Paulson, Maria Petschnig and Alex Schweder) construct and live in a two foot wide four story complex for a three week period. This collaborative performance piece questions our living environments and the isolation and limitations of the artificial contrived living space

Fossil. Solar powered kinetic sculpture
Fossil is a vary large solar powered mechanical dragon fly.
In sunshine the wings will periodically flutter and the mouth section twitches.
Length: 28cm. Wing Span: 33cm.
Fossil is so named because as I constructed it I was thinking of Meganeura,
a huge 320 million years old dragonfly-like insect belonging to the Protodonata group,
which had a wing span of around 70cm.
